Typography

Sorry I haven't posted in a while.  Here is some work from my typography class. I have always wanted to take a graphic design class and have been learning so much about fonts, layout, hierarchy, and more!  Learning about these things will help with my overall design work, but I can also see overlap into my illustration work because I am learning about composition and color.

Senior Show Coming Soon

My senior show is almost here! My show, along with eight of my friends, opens next week. I will take lots of photos and will share them with you.

The theme for our show is "Hello my name is" like those sticker name tags. It's our way of telling the world who we are and that we are going to entering post college life soon.

Below is my poster, and if you happen to be in the Providence area on March 22 send me an e-mail here and I can send you more information on the location of the show.

Free March Desktop Wallpaper with Calendar

Hi everyone!
I made another desktop wallpaper, this time it's for March 2012.  Feel free to download it and use it on your computer.  I continued my animal theme and thought that why shouldn't a hedgehog celebrate St. Patrick's day?  It has a handy calendar as well. It's satisfying to see that I can tell that I'm improving my skills in the program Illustrator.

Seeking Inspiration

This last week was the start to the new semester.  I'm really excited for my classes!  I'm taking a typography class, a class about portfolio preparation, an independent study on surface design, and an English class.

I'm really excited for my independent study because I think surface design is a great combination of my love of illustration as well as product designs.  Surface design is the industry of creating imagery to put on products whether it be a plate, a snowboard, bedding, or anything that has a physical surface.  My assignment for this week was to seek inspiration for my first collection of items I am going to design.  Part of the assignment was to go to the mall and consciously look at the surface designs on products.  This was really interesting because although I have always noticed surface design, it really amazed me to realize how much of our world is surrounded by surface designs.  This made me think that most people don't notice that someone had to design all these illustrations, patterns, and designs.

For my first collection I have decided to work with the theme of fire and sporting goods.  I made a physical inspiration board, which was new to me.  I have a Pinterest (you can follow me here), which is a virtual inspiration board, but I had never made a physical inspiration board.  This was fun and exciting and I took inspiration and ideas from everywhere.  I used physical objects as well as pictures from magazines and the internet.

My inspiration board

It's really helpful to have a bunch of visuals that are related (even loosely) right next to each other so connections can be made and inspiration can begin.  Inspiration is all around you in your life, you just need to make a conscious effort to be aware of your surroundings and experiences.  It can strike with the smallest thing, triggering an idea.

Now please excuse me, inspiration has struck and I need to go sketch.

Winter Book Reviews

I recently thought it's about time I review the books I have been reading since summertime.   My previous book reviews can be found here.

Lilo and Stitch: Collected Stories from the Film's Creators by Hiro Clark Wakabayashi.
This book is beautiful and unlike most "art of" books.  The stories that the creators write are personal and inspiring, but my favorite part is the artwork.  Lilo and Stitch is one of my favorite movies based on the art and story.  I love the delicate watercolor backgrounds and the early sketches made by Chris Sanders.  This book has many sketches, watercolors, and other works of art from the movie that I had never seen before.  There are even fun sketches that the story's creators made that are humorous.  My only criticism is that the text from the stories sometimes cover up the beautiful imagery.

Walt Disney Animation Studios The Archive Series: Design by Disney Editions.
This is my favorite book from Disney's Archive Series because it has a little bit of everything- character designs, beautiful backgrounds, paintings, story boards, color studies and more.  The book starts from the beginning of the Disney era up until the movie Tangled.  I especially love the paintings by Mary Blair.  The book is truly inspiring and I hope to make some master copies as studies.

The Pixar Treasures by Tim Hauser.
This book is an abbreviated version of The Pixar Touch: The Making of a Company by David A. Price, telling the history of Pixar.  The Pixar Treasures is like a fun scrapbook.  There is something fun and exciting to find on every page from postcards, to a flipbook, to letters, to pamphlets and more!  I know alot about Pixar, but I still learned things from this book.  This book is fun, exciting, and informative- everything a book should be!

The Art of Finding Nemo by Mark Cotta Vaz.
Finding Nemo is also one of my favorite movies because of the art style.  I had been debating buying this book, but am really glad I did.  There is so much beautiful art that I had never seen before.  I especially love all the pastel pieces that were used to help decide color and lighting.  The character designs are also particularly enjoyable to look at and see how each character progressed.  It is nice to see that Pixar artists also work in traditional media such as oil paint, acrylic, and charcoal.  A nice feature in this book is that they even give the medium and dimensions of each art piece.

Surf's Up: The Art and Making of a True Story by Cody Maverick.
Surf's Up is a great movie that is often overlooked.  The art style and direction in this movie is inspiring.  This book is incredible too (and can be bought relatively cheap).  Like The Pixar Treasures this book has fun extra add on elements throughout the book including a DVD that talks about how they made the images, stickers, posters, postcards, and more!  This book gives much insight into how computer animated films are made.  The character designs and environments are beautiful.  Another great thing about this book is the layout, it is fun and interesting, yet functional.

The Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins.
I decided to read these books before the movie comes out in March.  I had heard of The Hunger Games before but hadn't gotten around to reading them.  The Hunger Games is about a girl named Katniss and how she overcomes numerous unavoidable trials put in front of her.  Usually I am more of a fan of nonfiction, but the futuristic, semi sci-fi and fantastical world is very approachable.  Suzanne Collins writes in such a way that the events and characters are relatable (even though they are very different).  Almost every chapter ends in a cliffhanger, which makes an engaging story.  I love the visual imagery in the book.  I might even try to draw some of how I imagine the scenes or characters looking.  I'm so excited for the movie to come out soon!

The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks.
I'm only a few chapters into this book, but I have found it interesting and intriguing already.  This book is about how every person has one thing stopping them from becoming the best person that they can be.  Usually this is because people have a zone in which they are familiar living within and reaching outside that zone becomes too uncomfortable.  When people try to achieve something they eventually retreat back to what they are familiar with and do not reach their full potential.  I need to read more about this book to learn about how people can overcome their obstacles and can reach their full potential.

Go For It by Hallmark.
This book is filled with tons of inspirational quotes about various things.  The topics range include discovery, doing, success, and more.  Most of the quotes I am familiar with, but some are new or ones I had forgotten.  It is also nice to have a cute, little, well designed book that I can go to when I am needing a little bit of motivation or inspiration.

The Art of Pixar: 25th Anniv.: The Complete Color Scripts and Select Art from 25 Years of Animation by Amid Amidi.
This book is amazing!  Color scripts are Pixar's specific way of using color keys to help determine the color and lighting for their movies.  Unlike color keys however, color scripts are long continuous horizontals which have the images and colors bleeding from one scene into another.  This book has all the color scripts from all the Pixar movies to date (up through Cars 2).  It even has color scripts from Pixar's shorts as well as production art from all the movies as well.  This book is very helpful for me as an artist because I can study great color, layout, and compositions.

Blog Layout Update and Halloween Umbrellas Revisited

I've been wanting to customize my blog layout for a while since I learned some basic web design this past fall.  The background and header are now orange to match the theme of my portfolio website.  Let me know your thoughts if you like the update.

Recently I decided to revisit my Halloween umbrella ideas and create the artwork digitally.  Below is the before and after.

End of Internship and More Art!

I finished my internship at DCI and learned so much!  Below is some of the work I did.  This is only just a small fraction of what I did.  I especially enjoyed working on the patterns because I am going to be studying surface design this spring.

Here is a video I made showcasing DCI's new 2012 products.
To view the video below in higher quality please visit here.

Here are some of the patterns I made for DCI.

I also am in the process of applying to GAMBIT's summer program as an artist.  GAMBIT is a place at MIT where they work with students from Singapore and the US to create unique and experimental video games.  In order to apply to be a gaming artist you need to do an art test.  Part of the test is to draw an ostrich in the style of Edward Gorey.  I love Gorey's alphabet series (view it here), so I decided to make my own version for the letter C.

3D Landscape

I have decided to brush up a little bit on my 3D modeling.  Here is my first realistic 3D landscape.  I created it using a program called Vue.  I thought it would be fun to include some lava.

Happy New Year! Internship and updating past work

Happy belated new year!

I've started my 2012 with an internship at Decor Craft Inc. (DCI).  They are a fun, creative product design company.  I am interning within their design department and am learning so much!!!

Lately, I've also decided to revisit some of my previous product design work.  I took my old marker and pencil drawings and have drawn them digitally in Illustrator.  I plan to add these to my website soon.  Let me know your thoughts and I hope you enjoy!

Little Red Color Keys

These are color keys that I created based on the story Little Red Riding Hood.  I really wanted to explore color and create mood.  It was really frightening initially making the trees purple/blue, but I just kept going and it turned out better than I thought.  I really think I am starting to understand color and color relationships better.

Let's Paint Some Fruit

These paintings are from a few months back and I finally scanned them.  I have improved my color sense since then, but I was really proud of them at the time.  I was playing around with the idea of complementary colored fruit and backgrounds.  The pomegranate is painted in acrylics.  I used an interesting technique on the apple painting where you start with a red ground of watercolor and then erase the highlights using a bristle brush.  Then I went into the shadows with watercolor in order to keep the shadow areas transparent.  After that I put acrylic gloss medium over the painting so I could paint opaquely in the highlighted areas using acrylics.

Comics- Winsor McCay

This is a comic inspired by Winsor McCay, one of the fathers of comics and animation.  His work is so fun and whimsical such as his Little Nemo comic.  Here is one of his famous animations.  McCay's brillance later inspired others such as Walt Disney and comic book artists.
